TMJ Disorders

image16

Our jaw, known as the Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ), is a synovial joint not unlike other peripheral joints such as the shoulder or the fingers in our extremities.   However,  the TMJ differs from other peripheral joints because of its’ configuration and location. Intrinsic to the TMJ is a disc where the mandible (jaw) hangs from the creek bone like a hinge.   Muscles of mastication are small and have to often work in synergy with other muscles of the face and the neck.   Because of the inter-dependent functional relationship of the TMJ, its’ dysfunction can be multi-factorial including dental care, bruxism, trauma, arthritis, and disc herniation, just to name a few.

The multi-factorial nature of TMJ Disorders is reflected by the number of different health care professionals who might be involved in the care of this condition such as general dentist, physician, physiotherapist, orthodontist, and oral maxillofacial surgeon.

At Stouffville Physiotherapy Clinic, as part of conservative treatment, we provide interventions including therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation,  heat/ice,  massage,  gentle joint mobilization, postural correction, and general education.

Please feel free to discuss your TMJ needs with your dentist and physician as physiotherapy is only one part of conservative management and is meant to work in conjunction with other treatments such as medication, injection, and mouth guard/orthodontics, etc.
